Week of Welcome

Welcoming new students at Grand Avenue Welcome2020 Week of Welcome

WOW is the official beginning of your experience as a Cal Poly Mustang, when all new students join together in the days leading up to the fall quarter. Though local, state, and University guidelines have necessitated a modified format for 2020, Week of Welcome will continue to provide opportunities for friendships, connection to Cal Poly and the SLO community, and an exciting start to your Cal Poly story!

On August 7, 2020, Governor Newsom released the COVID-19 Industry Guidance for Institutions of Higher Education. In response to the Governor's directive, Cal Poly Campus Operations released protocols for Campus Events to the campus community. In accordance with the Campus Event Guidelines, 2020 Week of Welcome will be held Sept. 10-13 in a completely virtual format for all new students.

Week of Welcome programming encompasses key programs, key connections, and key resources - all of which new students will engage with during WOW this year! All required WOW programming will be hosted virtually to ensure a consistent experience for the entire incoming class of new Mustangs. Community-building and engagement activities will take place throughout the week to connect both new Mustangs joining from home and those living on campus.

While we can't gather in groups this year, Mustangs who have chosen to live on campus will have time to connect with others and explore the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo community in between your scheduled WOW activities.

Week of Welcome Dates: What to Expect

WOW is a dynamic collection of activities, events, and programs to engage new students with campus life, resources, and tons of other Cal Poly Mustangs! During WOW new students will...

  • Be introduced to tons of other new and current Mustangs and form new friendships
  • Connect with other Mustangs through community-building activities, intentional conversations, and a wide variety of interactive events
  • Participate in a variety of fun and exciting activities
  • Discover how to get connected and involved at Cal Poly
  • Get the scoop on how to navigate the college experience
  • Hear tips from Advisors on how to succeed academically at Cal Poly

A few days before WOW, you will receive an email with your WOW group information, including group number, WOW group zoom code, and the time of your first WOW activities taking place on Sept. 10. WOW groups are led by two Orientation Leaders that are current Cal Poly students who will guide you through WOW and help connect you to the Cal Poly community.

Your WOW group will meet regularly throughout WOW. Each day there will be check-in with your WOW group, virtual socials and activities, required presentations and programs, community building, and ample break time. Your specific group schedule will be shared by your Orientation Leaders in your first small group meeting.

We know that WOW this year is different than our traditional programming but we are confident that it will be worth your time and will help you be successful here at Cal Poly. Because things might be different than you expected, please take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions sections below that you might be wondering about.

Get Ready for WOW!

What and when is the first WOW activity?

WOW begins Thursday, Sept.10, 2020 through Sunday, Sept.13, 2020.

Your kickoff to WOW will be Big Fall Welcome. Your first WOW group meeting will take place immediately following Big Fall Welcome.

Big Fall Welcome will be held three (3) times on Thursday, Sept.10. Start times are 9 AM, 10 AM, and 11 AM. You will be assigned to a Big Fall Welcome time based on your WOW group.

Your assigned Big Fall Welcome time (and the zoom link to attend) will be mailed to your Cal Poly email address a few days before WOW along with your WOW group information.

We recommend disabling any email-forwarding on your Cal Poly account if you currently have it enabled.

How do i find out what WOW group I am in?

A few days before WOW, you'll receive an email to your Cal Poly email address that lists your WOW group number, WOW group zoom code, and your official start time for WOW on Sept.10, 2020.

We recommend disabling any email-forwarding on your Cal Poly account if you currently have it enabled.

Do I have to be on campus for WOW?

WOW will be online in a virtual format powered through Zoom. All new students should participate in WOW from where they are living for the fall quarter.

While we can't gather in groups this year, Mustangs who have chosen to live on campus will have time to connect with others and explore campus and San Luis Obispo community in between your scheduled WOW activities.

Do I need to wear a face covering?

Face coverings must be worn any time you are in a public space. Cal Poly will provide every community member with a face covering and face shield. All campus community members are asked to practice preventative measures to keep each other healthy, such as washing hands frequently, covering coughs, staying home when sick and getting a flu shot.

For additional information on face coverings, please review the following sites:

https://afd.calpoly.edu/emergency/resources/coronavirus/ppe

https://coronavirus.calpoly.edu/prevention-0

What are local public health guidelines that I should know about?

Students and their supporters must comply with local public health recommendations in all circumstances to slow the spread of COVID-19. This includes on-campus activities and off-campus activities. Local public health recommendations include:

  • Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when in public
  • Stay six feet apart from others
  • Stay home when you're sick
  • Avoid in-person gatherings with people who don't live with you
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water

This includes local, county and state guidelines, such as the current safety enhancement zone established by the city of San Luis Obispo.

Are there places to hang out on campus?

Indoor spaces will be limited to comply with the governor's guidance so we have expanded outdoor seating options in various locations throughout the campus including the UU Plaza, Mustang Way, Campus Market, PAC Plaza, and Dexter Lawn Area.

When do I meet my WOW group for the first time?

You'll meet your WOW group for the first time on Thursday, Sept. 10 immediately following your assigned Big Fall Welcome time.

Your WOW group information will be emailed to your Cal Poly email address a few days before WOW. This includes the time you will meet your WOW group and your unique WOW group zoom code.

We recommend disabling any email-forwarding on your Cal Poly account if you currently have it enabled.

What do I need to know about Move-In?

If you will be living on campus, check out the Move-In Website for details about this year's Mustang Move-In experience. Contact University Housing for any questions you may have.

If living on campus, refer to your assigned WOW Check-In time on your Mustang Move-In pass and stop by the University Union Plaza to complete the check-in process. Please note that you will NOT be able to check in early. Physical distancing and appropriate PPE are required at WOW Check-In.

Living off-campus? Virtual Check-In will happen at your first WOW group meeting!
