Welcome to Cal Poly!

College is a time of new beginnings for a student - beginning to find out who they are, an opportunity to learn inside as well as outside the classroom as they prepare for a career, and a key chapter in their lives as they explore the part they will play in the world. New Student & Transition Programs, with an enthusiastic team of over 700, is here to support and guide students and their families through their first steps of this journey at Cal Poly.

When I attended my first Open House at my alma mater, I felt at home. It was a place where I could see myself growing as a person and finding my community with shared values. There was such support given to me during orientation that I joined as a team member my second year and became an Orientation Leader over the next few years. I met my wife at orientation, and we still reminisce about how that transformative program has shaped our lives.

The orientation team and I bring that same passion to California Polytechnic State University's New Student & Transition Programs. We ensure that all new Mustangs begin their journey with a learn by doing experience and the resources to thrive at Cal Poly, as well as in the community. Our commitment to students and their supporter's success are illustrated through our signature programs:

  • Open House — a three-day event that celebrates Cal Poly and the achievements of students and families, faculty, alumni and the community.
  • SLO Days — an immersive experience into academics and resources for all incoming first year and transfer students.
  • Parent & Supporter Orientation at SLO Days — an opportunity for the parents and family members to build community and learn how to support their new Mustang.
  • Week of Welcome (WOW) — the official beginning as a Cal Poly Mustang with opportunities to make friends, learn about themself, and connect with Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo community.
