Orientation Board

Orientation Board is the team of students that manage and support WOW Leads and WOW Team; together, they are responsible for putting on the Week of Welcome, Cal Poly's second half of its new student orientation program. They plan a week of events, programming, and activities designed to help new students feel at home at Cal Poly and in the San Luis Obispo community and form lifelong friendships with fellow students. Board plays an integral role in the Cal Poly experience for over 5,000 incoming students and manage a team of over 900 student leaders.

What's your favorite WOW memory?: My favorite WOW memory is when my co and I decided to go off book. We were struggling to keep our Wowies engaged throughout the night, and kept finding them wanting to go back to their residence hall. It was the third night of most of our group ditching us, and it had been a long day. The remaining people in the group weren’t very excited about what we had planned, so we decided to change our DLS to keep everyone entertained. We ended up going to the beach and stargazing, the whole time sharing stories, laughing, and bonding. It was the turning point in the week, and reassurance that my co and I were doing a good job in helping our Wowies transition.

We were all in Morro Bay in our kayaks and we were all enjoying the adorable sea otters and sea lions as well as just playing around and it felt like the first time that everyone in the group was truly comfortable with one another and I knew that we had finally gotten over the early awkwardness of the week.

What's your favorite WOW memory?: My favorite WOW memory came from my experience as an orientation leader right after taking my WOWies to Inflate-A-Fest. I was laying on the grass with my CO looking up at my group hula-hoop (or attempting to) and uncontrollably laughing together through the heat and exhaustion of the day. It was a small, but distinct point in the week when I could see that my group was turning into a family, and I understood why the process of becoming a WOW leader was 100% worth it.

Why did you join WOW Team?: I joined WOW Team because of the great experiences I've had with my facilitators over the past two years. Avery and Savannah were the best at making me laugh, making me feel comfortable, and brightening my day whenever I saw them, and I wanted to continue spreading the love!
