WOW Team Leads and WOW Team

Together with Orientation Board, the WOW Leads and WOW Team work together to put on Cal Poly's annual Week of Welcome, the second part of Cal Poly's two-part new student orientation that helps over 5,000 incoming students feel at home at Cal Poly and in the San Luis Obispo community and form lifelong friendships with their fellow students. They are also responsible for training over 900 student leaders to lead groups of incoming students and assisting Board in planning events, entertainment, programming, and activities throughout the Week.

On the last day of WOW my co and I decided to do paper plate awards with our group and at the very end they pulled out a paper plate award for each of us: Best Dorm Dad and Mom (I got best dorm Dad!). They had each taken the time out of their busy weeks to sign a message for each of us on the back of the paper plate; it's something I have hanging in my room today.

What is your favorite WOW memory? My favorite WOW memory when I was an incoming student was kayaking in Morro Bay. My group and I hadn't known each other for very long and my WOW Leaders decided that a fun ice breaker would be to get people in our group to sneak up on each other and throw them into the water. It turned into a lot of running and laughing, which made everyone feel more comfortable around each other and was a lot of fun.

What is your favorite WOW memory? During my WOW experience as a first year we went out to Morro Rock one evening, and watched the sunset and had a picnic on the beach. When night fell, we did an activity where we each wrote one thing about us that we wanted to leave behind when we entered college on a small rock, and then threw it into the ocean. It was very cathartic, and I thought it was a good symbolism for finding a fresh start and leaving old fears behind.

What is your favorite WOW memory? My favorite WOW memory came as a group leader, after my group went through the awareness gallery. Before that, we hadn't really been clicking as a group. Sitting in the grass that night, I heard some stories that I will never forget as long as I live. They allowed the group to come together and realize they were more alike than any had thought, and gave me a sense of perspective that I had not previously experienced.
